MHRP Kenya Country Director Receives Prestigious Military Civilian Award

Dr. Doug Shaffer, Director of the Walter Reed Project–Kenya received both the Meritorious Civilian Service Award and Membership in the Order of Military Medical Merit.

In a recent ceremony in Kenya, Dr. Doug Shaffer, Director of the Walter Reed Project–Kenya and Deputy Director of MHRP’s therapeutics research received both the Meritorious Civilian Service Award and Membership in the Order of Military Medical Merit.

The Department of the Army’s Meritorious Civilian Service Award is the second highest award granted by the Secretary of the Army or a major Army commander to civilian personnel. Membership in the Order denotes distinguished service, which is recognized by the senior leadership of the U.S. Army Medical Department (AMEDD). 

COL Tom Logan, the commanding officer of the U.S. Army Medical Research Unit Kenya (USAMRU-K) presented Dr. Shaffer with the awards. Dr. Shaffer has led the Walter Reed Project–Kenya, MHRP’s Kenya site and USAMRU-K field station based in Kericho, since 2004.
