Staff from the Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP), The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and Peace Corps joined forces on November 30th to celebrate World AIDS Day and the grand opening of the Mukono District Youth Center. Activities included free HIV testing and counseling, free condom distribution and free safe medical circumcisions (SMC) along with a performance by Artivists 4 Life. Nearly 400 people were tested, 31 people benefited from SMC services and many more enjoyed the festivities.

This is the second youth center MUWRP has opened in Uganda. In March 2006, the Kayunga District Youth Recreational Center opened as a joint effort between MUWRP and the Kayunga District Health Authorities with the goal of providing HIV prevention, care and treatment services to the youth population of Kayunga District.

Under the direction of a peace corps volunteer, trained area youth run the youth center activities, which include sports, games, clubs, competitions, videos, data capture and a library. These youth also provide the bulk of Kayunga District's community HIV testing, counseling, prevention, and sensitization activities with emphasis on schools and domestic violence and gender issues.
