MHRP's African Cohort Study (AFRICOS), is a longitudinal observational cohort study that is able to answer key questions surrounding people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. The AFRICOS team worked with the Global Health Security and Diplomacy (GHSD) U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Ambassador Dr. John Nkengasong and Chief Science Officer, Dr. Mike Reid, to develop and publish a manuscript summarizing key findings and highlighting the transformative impact of this cohort and how AFRICOS has contributed to the HIV 95-95-95 goals in sub-Saharan Africa.
MHRP and local governments and organizations provide PEPFAR-funded HIV prevention care and treatment services in Kenya's South Rift Valley Region. They have launched a mobile clinic to provide HIV testing and counseling, linkage to care and referral for comorbidities like tuberculosis. MHRP has launched its first research study in the Philippines, following upon an expansion of PEPFAR-funded HIV preventetion, care and treatment services into the region through a military-to-military partnership.
MHRP's African Cohort Study, or AFRICOS, represents the intersection of research and global health programming to bring about an end to HIV. At the AIDS 2024 conference, researchers shared a wealth of data and findings from the AFRICOS study on topics ranging from the neurocognitive effects of HIV in young people, to food insecurity among PEPFAR clients, to hypertension and cardiovascular health in people living with HIV, and more.
