Dr. Salzwedel is Chief of the Pathogenesis and Basic Research Branch of the NIAID Division of AIDS. He oversees a broad portfolio of grant funding, including the Martin Delaney Collaboratories for HIV Cure Research (MDC) program, the Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR) program, the Centers for HIV Structural Biology, and the NIH HIV Reagent Program. Prior to joining NIAID, Dr. Salzwedel was Senior Director of Virology and Drug Discovery at Panacos Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he led efforts to characterize the first-in-class HIV maturation inhibitor, bevirimat, and identify orally bioavailable HIV fusion inhibitors. Dr. Salzwedel received his postdoctoral training at NIAID in the Laboratory of Viral Diseases studying the mechanism of HIV entry into cells. He earned his PhD in Microbiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and his BS in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
